Bully’s Acre Walk
From weeks of research and investigation, this proposal hopes to tackle the forgotten and unappreciated history of Bully’s Acre, addressing the many layers of the graveyard through multiple engagements; from public ceremonies to community celebrations; from the open land to the walled-off cemetery we see today.
Each engagement will offer the public a new interaction with the site, whether it be informational, visual or physical. The hope is to reignite interest from the public revolving around Bully’s Acre and have RHK/OPW open the grounds to the public as a heritage walk.
The proposal seeks to be a delicate and light touch as engagements go. It uses appropriate lightweight materiality and limited physical interventions to succeed at this.
As visitors walk along the formal edge of Bully’s Acre, they are met with an additional path skirting along the boundary will and are encouragedto travel this path and learn more about the cemetery. The Path starts off as a historical reminder of what Bully’s Acre was and is. Educating the visitor on the immense influence the has had on Kilmainham.
The path then offers the viewer a peek over the wall, visually illustrating what the graveyard look like in its current state.
The carefully crafted path winds through nature, beckoning with serene allure. Each step deepens the connection to Bully's Acre. The transformative design invites exploration, whispering secrets of the past. It is a gateway to history and imagination, where the present merges with ancient stories.
The final step reveals unseen views of Bully's Acre & surroundings.
